p-cold-throw-panel
P-01 blind cold-throw panel
How the cold and hot throw ratings in every burn record are produced. Five panellists, unlabelled jars, a fixed sniff order and a five-point scale with written anchors. The rating is the trimmed mean, and the panel never sees the wax code.
Procedure
-
01
Condition every sample at 21 C for 24 h in a lidded jar of the same size. Unlabelled, coded on the base only.
-
02
Cold throw first: open one jar at a time, sniff at 150 mm, close it, and score before the next jar is opened. No more than 20 seconds per sample.
-
03
Hot throw second: light each candle for 60 minutes in the same room in the same order, one at a time, and score at the 60-minute mark from the far side of the room.
-
04
Record both scores per panellist. Discard the highest and lowest for each sample and average the remaining three to one decimal.
-
05
Rest the panel for fifteen minutes between sample sets and re-read the anchor definitions aloud before restarting.
Scent throw is the softest number on this site and the easiest to fake. The procedure below is what keeps it comparable: unlabelled vessels, a fixed order, and a scale whose anchor points are written down before the first jar is opened rather than after the last.
The scale runs 1 to 5: 1 is detectable only with the nose inside the vessel; 3 is detectable at arm's length; 5 fills the room within a minute of lighting. A score below 3 on the hot throw is reported as low rather than omitted, because a low number is data.
